Volunteers in Action

This is but a small sampling of our many volunteers.  We owe a special thank you to each and every person in our community who gives time and energy to our organization.  Whether arranging flowers, delivering bouquets, recycling vases, picking up floral and vase donations, doing general office work, serving on event committees, or any of the MANY various tasks it takes to fulfill our mission, we are eternally grateful to our volunteers.  If you would like to become a part of our mission please sign up at our main volunteer page and let us know how you would like to become involved.

Susan Campbell is a dedicated volunteer who devotes 24 hours or more per month to our charity. Why she loves Random Acts of Flowers…”My commitment to the community and non-profits is very simple – if it has to do with CONSERVATION I am interested. Random Acts of Flowers is a model conservation organization. I also volunteer for Foothills Land Conservancy, East Tennessee Furniture & Textiles, Historical Society East Tennessee Collections Committee for the Museum, arts groups, historic restoration of a church and a hundred year old property.”

Glen Baxmann is floral designer extraordinaire. While receiving treatment at UT’s chemo hut, the lady next to him received a surprise bouquet from Random Acts of Flowers. The retired floral designer was touched by the kind act, located our website, and volunteered his services. Glen arranges bouquets every week if his treatment schedule allows. Recently, Gay Lyons of the Knoxville News Sentinel captured his story and will publish in the Life section in January 2012. Be sure to check it out. Thanks for volunteering Glen!

Nancy Guertin is our resident graphic designer.  She is the talent behind almost every promotional piece put out by Random Acts of Flowers.  She gives of her time and talent because she believes in the work that we do in our community.  We owe a big thank you to Nancy for helping put a professional face on all our print materials!  She and her husband also strapped on ice skates for the 2nd Annual Ice Skate-a-Thon in December 2009.

Lori Chmielewski is our delivery volunteer at Blount Memorial Hospital.  She is always ready with a smile and something sweet to say to our recipients.  Lori also helps to collect and wash vases for us.  She has even been known to drive a car-full of vases from Florida after a vacation!  She has also helped with creating and editing Excel documents containing information pertaining to our organization.  We admire, and appreciate, Lori because she is always willing and able to do anything to help Random Acts of Flowers fulfill our mission.

When speaking of volunteers we can hardly get by without thanking our Board of Directors.  Pictured here are Larsen Jay, Founder/Executive Director, Melissa Feinbaum, and David Jernigan, current President of the Board. The Board of Directors provides the oversight, guidance, and support for our organization.  These hard working volunteers are the backbone behind our organization and deserve our utmost appreciation for helping make our mission possible.  Thank you:)

John and Chris Scurlock talked for two years about volunteering together but couldn’t find the right place until they came across the Random Acts of Flowers commercial on TV. The couple of five years has a passion for flowers and gardening. Chris used to be a wedding and event planner and “missed all the flowers”, she said. After checking out the RAOF website she convinced John to join her. On their first day of volunteering they cleaned and arranged over 200 vases that will go to good use, and John offered to be on the maintenance crew for Flora, our delivery van. It’s great to have a husband/wife team on the Random Acts of Flowers volunteer crew!

Jackie Barineau not only is Jackie a cancer survivor, she is also a great part of the Random Acts of Flowers team. Jackie wanted a rewarding way to spend all the time on her hands, and when she saw the 10,000th delivery commercial she called us up! Jackie has always loved flowers and plants every since she would visit her grandfather’s greenhouse as a girl. She has been on the team for 7 weeks now and has already seen the great aspects of our program. Upon visiting an assisted living house, she met a woman named Pearl who was moved to tears by her flowers; Pearl couldn’t believe that “someone thought she was special”. Jackie comes in to volunteer while her husband watches NASCAR so she can help others in the way Pearl was helped.
